What Is Periodontal Disease?

Healthy bone and gum tissue are vital to supporting healthy teeth. It is our top priority to diagnosis periodontal concerns early and prevent the progression of periodontal (gum) disease at its earliest point.

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is the loss of the bone that surrounds and supports the teeth. It occurs as a result of infection and inflammation in the gum tissue and bone.

In its early stage, called gingivitis, the gums become swollen, red and may bleed easily. As the disease progresses, the gums can pull away from the teeth, the supporting bone around the teeth can recede and be lost, and the teeth may loosen or even fall out.

Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria in the mouth that infect the gum tissue surrounding the tooth. When bacteria stay on the teeth long enough, they form a film called plaque, which eventually hardens to calculus, also known as tartar. Tartar build-up can form below the gum line, leading to bone loss and disease progression.

What are the Symptoms of Periodontal Disease?

There are a number of symptoms or signs that you may have periodontal disease, such as bad breath or a bad taste, red or swollen gums that bleed easily, tenderness or pain in the gum tissue, loose teeth, sensitive teeth, changes in your bite, or gums that are loosening or pulling away from the teeth.

However, you may experience no symptoms at all.

Periodontal disease is more treatable when it is diagnosed at early stages, before symptoms arise. At every exam appointment at our office, you will be screened for periodontal disease.

What is the Treatment for Periodontal Disease?

Once diagnosed, treatment for periodontal disease may include an in-office procedure called scaling and root planing, also referred to as a “deep cleaning.” This involves cleaning below the surface of the gums to clean the roots of the teeth, removing build-up and helping heal the diseased tissue, stopping the progression of bone loss around the teeth.

Antibiotic therapy, such as Arestin, can also be used to treat gum disease and may be recommended as part of your overall care plan.  More advanced cases may require referral to a specialist for surgical treatment.

The best treatment is prevention! Regular preventative dental care can help diagnosis periodontal concerns early and prevent the progression of periodontal disease at its earliest point.
