Preventative Dental Care

The Best Treatment is Prevention

Routine, preventive dental care is the foundation of your dental health.  Seeing us at least once every six months can help us diagnose any issues early, before they become more costly or painful.  Our preventive dental care services include routine exams, dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, X-rays and sealants.

At your first visit, we begin with a thorough dental examination. This includes a medical history review, an evaluation of existing dental conditions and treatment needs, a periodontal exam to evaluate the health of your gum tissue, an oral cancer screening, a TMJ evaluation, and any appropriate X-rays (based on individual need). We ask that you arrange for your current X-rays to be transferred to us from your previous dental office prior to your appointment.

We will address any concerns you may have and will discuss any findings and treatment options.

If time allows, we will complete a thorough dental cleaning.  If it has been many years since your last dental visit or cleaning, this may take more than one appointment.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer screenings are an important part of each routine dental exam. Oral cancer can be life-threatening, but early detection and treatment can greatly improve survival rates.  Since oral cancer does not always present with symptoms, routine screenings are critical for early diagnosis.

There are three main risk factors for oral cancer. Both tobacco use and heavy alcohol consumption have long been recognized as causes of oral cancer. Oral cancer can also be caused by high-risk strains of the HPV virus.  HPV-related oral cancer is on the rise and can occur in young, otherwise healthy, non-smoking individuals. Vaccination can help prevent HPV-associated cancers.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride is safe and a very important part of preventing cavities in patients of all ages.

At your visit, we will determine your risk for developing cavities by discussing your diet, home care, previous history, health conditions, and medications.

Fluoride treatment can be done in the office, through application of fluoride varnish, or at home, through a prescription fluoride toothpaste or home fluoride trays.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a great protective measure to help prevent cavities. A sealant is a resin material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth. Sealants act as a barrier to protect the enamel from plaque and acid that can cause cavities. Sealants protect the deep grooves in your teeth that toothbrush bristles cannot easily reach.

Studies show that application of sealants can decrease the occurrence of cavities on the protected surfaces by up to 80%!

Sealant application is easy and only takes a few minutes per tooth. Sealants will be checked at each appointment to make sure they are intact, and will usually last several years before reapplication is needed.
