Remineralization
A Conservative Treatment Option
In some instances when cavities are very small, they can actually be reversed with a procedure called remineralization.
The first stage of a cavity is decalcification, also known as incipient decay or a white spot lesion. This is when acid causes the enamel to lose some of its minerals, turning the enamel rough, chalky and slightly softer than healthy enamel.

At this stage of a cavity, we can sometimes reverse the decay process using a topical agent that delivers fluoride, calcium, and phosphate ions to the enamel of the tooth. This strengthens the enamel and helps prevent these lesions from progressing to cavities that require restorations/fillings.
This also improves the appearance of teeth with white spot lesions by returning the chalky, white enamel to the smooth, shiny appearance of healthy enamel. This procedure is a fast, painless, non-invasive way to reverse these early lesions.

The procedure consists of cleaning the tooth surface, applying an acid etch to make the tooth more porous, then applying a topical agent that contains minerals to remineralize and strengthen the enamel. We may recommend multiple appointments for multiple applications and will also recommend the application of the topical paste at home to help achieve the best results.
